I had a girlfriend e-mail me last night saying, “Congrats, now what is indie publishing?” LOL

It’s really the same as self-publishing, but there is such a negative stigma to that term that I wanted a term that had a more positive connotation.

We have indie filmmakers – those who gather the resources to put together a movie and distribute it and showcase it as festivals, etc.

We have indie musicians – those who gather their music onto albums and distribute them and make a living off their talents.

Aren’t we indie publishers – those who gather our words into books and distribute them and make (or attempt to make as the others above do, too) a living off our talents?

No one belittles indie filmmakers and say their work is crap and shoddy. In fact, a few of them indie filmmakers find themselves in bidding wars from traditional production companies when their works are featured at Sundance and other outlets.

No one belittles the indie musician who starts off making mixtapes and hustling in underground clubs, and getting word on the street about him and then finds himself in the public eye, with a record deal from a traditional music company because he has talent.

Why should us writers – artists in our own right – be held to any standard beneath the one illustrated above?

Yep, I went off a bit. LOL
