NaNoWriMo – Day One
posted by: ShonBaconFor the last three years, I have participated in and won the NaNoWriMo challenge.
This year, my goal would be different. I had decided to write two screenplays instead of a novel.
For about a year now, my love of the novel had waned. Primarily because I was tired of the rejection letters and tired of hearing that I didn’t write “black” enough or didn’t write sexy enough or whatever enough. In the year I’ve been writing scripts, I had one script place in a competition and just recently, I learned another short script is a finalist in a competition (Will learn on the 12th if I’m in the top 10 and an eventual WINNER). Not to mention (though I will) a few people who had at least showed general interest in my scripts. It made sense that I should write what 1) I enjoyed and 2) what others might actually BUY.
So screenplays I would write.
And then a novel idea hit me. Literally hit me. Literally heard God say, “Go ahead and write it.”
So, reluctantly, just a week ago, I decided to write a novel for NaNoWriMo.
I’ve spent the last week being an outlining fiend, trying to get as much of the idea down as possible for today.
Here’s the gist of my project:
Novel Title: The Fixer
Novel Description: Meet Genesis Anne Baxter – The Fixer, 36.
As a teen, Genesis fixed her siblings – playing Mom and Dad while her parents dealt with their disastrous marriage. Those initial years of fixing helped to form her current life.
Today, a thirty-something editor/freelance writer, Genesis fixes everything – chipped lives of siblings, leaky friendships, busted marriages, clogged self-esteem of others – oftentimes to the detriment of her own life.
When she reconnects with a man she loved briefly and lost years ago, Genesis is forced to start thinking about herself as a person and must decide if she’s ready to break free and have a life or if she plans to keep her life under lock and key as she fixes the world of its troubles.

Today, I got up pretty early to do some major grocery shopping. Once the food was put away, I went to writing. I did four, one-hour writing jags, and for today, my word count is 4,744. I’m VERY pleased. Even like how most of the writing reads.
Plan to go straighten up some and take care of some e-mail stuff so that tomorrow I can focus on two important things – football and writing.
Here’s to breaking the 10k mark tomorrow!

Congrats on it all. I hope to hit the marks you have already hit and is striving to hit by the end of the week. Your story sounds interesting, can’t wait to read an excerpt after the challenge is over.
